Fall 2013 Art Show

Wow. This was a great show. Thank-you to all the kids! It was an honour to make art with you!
Painting from Photo

Painting from Photo

The projector is a great tool for tracing lines and shapes, and we put this tool to use for painting from photos! The kids traced the lines of a photo onto a transparency, projected it up onto a canvas, and traced it much larger. They then used both their lines and the photo to guide them as they painted!

Junior Artists Spring 2013

Junior Artists Spring 2013

Our pre-school classes are full of imagination and play, and all the things in the studio to explore and make!!
Tree Houses

Tree Houses

One student's great idea started a trend in the studio! His tree house inspired 4 more. It was another project that happened without any influence from me, and that is what I always dream to see happen in the studio –the kids truly leading the show. I held back and watched as these things were built. The imagination that went into each house was spectacular. The idea satisfied the adventurous, spirited imagination of a child so well, that the kids kept wanting to come back to the same project week after week, adding more and more coolness to their tree houses.
Shadow Tracing

Shadow Tracing

Once in a while, you get to be a part of a break through. Even if it happens to you, it’s something you can’t predict, or intentionally make happen. It just does. This time, it started with M and H’s time spent playing and experimenting with the overhead projector.
Paper Mache Food

Paper Mache Food

This was one of those projects where ideas spread amongst the girls like wild fire. They shared their ideas openly, and there was no possessiveness amongst them. It was really fun to watch the initial idea about making fake fruit become bowls, cookies, ice cream cones, pumpkins, and even dolls.
Strange Sculptures

Strange Sculptures

So you take a wire coat hanger, a nylon sock, and a plywood square. You do a little twisting, pulling, bending, painting, and that’s pretty much all the magic you need to make these awesome little modern sculptures…

Finn's Maze: The Perplexbox

Finn's Maze: The Perplexbox

Finn came up with a brilliant idea. He wanted to build a maze, and fortunately I had just the right tools he needed. We got cardboard trays, and little strips of wood for the walls, and a trusty old mustard bottle filled with free-flowing white glue.
Hot Air Balloons

Hot Air Balloons

We made these beautiful hot air balloons out of paper lanterns, adding layers of tissue paper, splatter paint, and glitter. And most of them came to be flown by strange one-eyed aliens. hmmmmm...

String Art..

String Art..

The boys jumped right into the deep end with their study of patterns, as they embarked on the tedious, frustrating task of string art. They had created art like this before, with nails and plywood, but the pins and delicate thread were a whole new ball game.
Landscape Painting...

Landscape Painting...

M and H drew immediate inspiration from the neon paint. They were motivated to paint on canvas, and try the new and exciting colours in all the ways they could.
Shaving Cream Printing... again..

Shaving Cream Printing... again..

This project is great not only because it is such a sensory experience, but because the results are so stunning! The colours swirl and twist all over the paper, looking like gassy clouds and nebulae.

Cuckoo Clocks

Who doesn’t want to go cuckoo once in a while? This project was an attempt to have the kids slow down and keep coming back to add layers of personality, detail, and whimsy with all sort of mediums and materials, taking their pieces a little further every time.

More Dollhouses.

This is a project that I have been doing with little girls for years. Watching their imaginations zoom in to a miniature scale, where clam shells are kitchen sinks and old mardi gras necklaces are bead curtains, never gets old. This time I tried to provoke conversation about houses, and here's what it sounded like.
