Class Book Projects

Documenting and honouring the creative work and wisdom of children has got to be my favourite thing ever. I have had some incredible opportunities over the years to collaborate with classroom teachers, lead units of study, gather the children's work on a subject and compile it into full colour, professionally published books.
Celestial Gardens

Celestial Gardens

Thank goodness for my dad and his woodshop, because he makes projects like this so easy.  All we did was cut the 1 inch plywood into approximately 5x5 inch spares, router the edges to smooth them, then stain them, and finally drilled a few holes in the top. The rest was up to the kids.
They used wire, styrofoam balls, and paint to create the flowers, although some seem more celestial than anything. As a group, they look so whimsical and weird. On their own, they certainly make a statement and could adorn the most modern mantle, causing viewers to say ooh la la. Maybe?

Giacometti sculptures

Giacometti sculptures

Giacometti was an important artist to the surrealist movement, and his Walking Man life-sized statue sold for a world record of $104.3 million dollars in 2010. The thing that people find so amazing about this piece is that it not only depicts an image of a rather ordinary man, but could arguably serve as a symbol for all humanity. The thin, wiry frame is reminiscent of a shadow of a person with only his posture to tell his story.
Treasure Boxes

Treasure Boxes

Who doesn't love a cigar box? They are sturdy, strong, and interesting, make great treasure boxes. They are also perfect for decoupage, and the best part is these ones were free! Thank you to Old Morris Tobacco Shop for donating these boxes to the kids at James Bay Community School. We used all sorts of patterned paper and pictures and buttons to decorate them.

A Poet's Life

A Poet's Life

Another book project with the wonderful group of grade 4 students that I work with. This book was an expression of who each student was. They wrote beautiful and honest poetry, supplied their favourite lines from other poems they had written, and made incredible collages of their most prized possessions as the layout for each page. The quality and diversity of each student's contribution is amazing.
