Camp projects

Childhood kingdoms

Childhood kingdoms

This was epic. The kids spent the entire week in the headspace that they were a ruler of a kingdom. Adorned with crowns, sceptres, and robes we could not tear them away from this project all week!
foxes

foxes

aren't we clever, and aren't we sly….

With Jeff as our teacher, we made these amazing boats and took them to the beach!
3D initials

3D initials

I LOVED this one. They turned out so cool!!
Houses... more houses

Houses... more houses

Houses seem to be one of the most fun things to make here. Sifting through all the tidbits, we have and endless supply of things to make furniture, decorations, whatever we could ever imagine....
Pencap Dolls

Pencap Dolls

These campers made the coolest cast of characters to live in their tree forts. What a great use of felt pen caps, don't you think? Brilliant kids!
Gnomes and squirrels

Gnomes and squirrels

These campers loved the paper mache, so we did gnomes AND squirrels. Why not?
Melting Crayons...

Melting Crayons...

Hot rocks and candles. We loved melting the wax... Sometimes the danger is the fun!
Stick sculptures

Stick sculptures

Splatter paint some sticks. Get a glue gun, and presto! Really cool artifacts.

Colour Collage Paintings

We used colour and quotes to inspire us with this one. The girls went crazy splattering up some cardboard that we cut up and added to the mix!

Owl Pillows

Gotta love owls! These girls were naturals on the sewing machine and, well, I guess you could say we had a real hoot. ;)

Cakes!

Cakes!

Even though these cakes might taste like cardboard, they sure look good enough to eat! A cake for every occasion. Yummers.
Fish

Fish

Tinfoil is so much fun to scrunch. It sounded like a rain storm as the fish were formed. And then for those scales…. And whales…
Batik-Style Shirts

Batik-Style Shirts

Instead of wax, we used blue gel glue. Aren’t we a fashionable bunch?
Fun in the sun, and rain.

Fun in the sun, and rain.

It is so great living so close to 2 different beaches. And such a perfect distance from the sun. And even we, at art camp, can have fun in the rain.
Fabric Collage Trays

Fabric Collage Trays

“Rachel, where should I put this?” I have an idea, on the very first day we will each make a tray, and everything you make over the week will go in there, when you are finished. “Rachel, where should I put this?”
Catapult Painting

Catapult Painting

One two, three, SPLAT! A whole battalion of pompoms were launched ruthlessly at the giant paper. Paint bombs came raining down upon the empty canvas. Many shots were fired but missed target, and pretty soon the attacking forces resorted to using their bare hands. It was pretty intense.
Beach Treasure Hunt 2013

Beach Treasure Hunt 2013

All the beauty on a beach. We sift through the pebbles for beach glass, dead crabs, shells, and goose feathers. We find sticks and flowers. We bring them back and compose our art.
Flags of the World

Flags of the World

Bottle caps and sparkles, an atlas, and an idea for every flag in the world. Too bad we ran out of bottle caps! Let’s hand it to the worldy girls. Well done!
Private Camp

Private Camp

Ever wish you could be the only kid at an art camp, where you get to make whatever you want? One young artist graced me with her presence every morning for a week this summer and here is what she created.
August 2012 Camp Art Show!!

August 2012 Camp Art Show!!

String Art

String Art

Someone told me that string theory was dead, so I thought we should take a trip back in time to the 1970’s to make these wonderful string art pieces. They turned out so awesome! The studio fell into silent concentration while the stringing was happening, and in the capable hands of young artisits, the strings and pins transformed into retro beauty.
Neon Madness

Neon Madness

We visited the sprit of the 80’s next and came up with these neon splattery works of art. They are wild, free, and bright –just like the kids who made them!
Rubber Cement Resist

Rubber Cement Resist

This was another experiment. Because we love to try new things here, all the time. We used drippy rubber cement, let it dry, painted water colours over top, and once that was dry, we rubbed off the glue, and viola! These wonderful paintings... We just got a taste of the possibilities....
Blindfold Painting

Blindfold Painting

Just for a good laugh, we each took a turn getting blindfolded and painting the features and clothes on a stick man. The giggles  were to die for.
Shaving Cream Printing

Shaving Cream Printing

This was a very fragrant and sensory activity! It smelled so good, I asked the kids if they wished they were men with five o’clock shadows, but they all said no. The most beautiful and intricate patterned prints came out of it, and we used the paper in our memory books.
Plaster Casting

Plaster Casting

We had some good times with the plaster casting materials making face masks and hand sculptures. Some of us got really messy and we loved it!!
Glitter Mobiles

Glitter Mobiles

Is there anything as lovely as a sparkle? How about millions, everywhere? These beautiful mobiles were a two-day affair. The kids just couldn’t sprinkle enough sparkle. And it was impossible not to take millions of photos.
Shell Creatures

Shell Creatures

What fun this was to make strange and wonderful creatures out of the shells I collected on the shelliest beach in the world...
July 2012 Camp Highlights

July 2012 Camp Highlights

This camp was all about experimenting. We made pinatas, marble painted, made aprons, door knob hangers, lanterns, and more! What a great week! Check out the photos! The kids even made a few bucks at their little corner store that they created!
Monsters!!!!

Monsters!!!!

With a small number of kids, you can do these time consuming, and tedious projects... and it was, of course,  a big hit! I asked the kids what their favourite project of the week was, and it was this. The stuffies. I think they would have done this every day if there wasn't so much other stuff to try!
Marble Tracks III

Marble Tracks III

Another engineer came to Shyness and Bloom, and he spent the week building, adjusting, and elaborating his marble track. You'd be impressed with the precision of his runs... This kid's got the knack!
Modern Sculpture

Modern Sculpture

These campers felt the modern vibe, as they sculpted on this particular morning. They did two all-time-fave projects: The Giacometti Men, and the "Celestial Gardens."
Swing Painting

Swing Painting

Okay. So, you should try everything once.
Canvas Painting

Canvas Painting

Ah, there's nothing like a fresh canvas. These campers were inspired by images they saw, and ideas they had. And they were brave enough to make that first mark.
Tie Dye!

Tie Dye!

This was so fun! Each shirt came out so different, and we all looked like one very cool team. And in the July camp, the kids had a go at the sewing machine and made themselves tie-dye blankets!
Shoe Box Dioramas

Shoe Box Dioramas

The girls embraced the natural look of each paper and print to make these amazingly cool dioramas. Each with a vision of her own, the girls worked hard to make these mini scenes tell a little story.
Puppets!

Puppets!

What a gang: 2 sister pandas, an elephant, a giraffe, a cat, a monkey, and a girl.
NEON madness

NEON madness

We began with neon foot prints, moved onto hand prints, then splattering paint right from the bottle. Then neon high fives, and eventually neon paint tag. It was bright.
Spray Paint Stencil Painting

Spray Paint Stencil Painting

Gold spray paint! The girls found different things to use as stencils, some chose lids, some chose bits of nature. Gold!

"Milk" Glass

So DIY it hurts. Well, since we all got a nice drink out of the deal, it wasn't so bad. Vases as dear as these will make you want to go and pick flowers everyday!
Little houses

Little houses

Fun little houses, for cute little mouses? (sorry) Three of the campers opted to make little houses for little critters. Complete with beds, couches, tables and chairs, huge yards with ponds and stone pathways, these little houses are labours of love.
House Shelf

House Shelf

What a very nice place to keep some knickknacks. Four of the campers decided to make these shelves, and many coats of paint and gloss were used to make the wood shine, and the patterned paper was thoughtfully chosen. I'd live there.
Colour Wheel World

Colour Wheel World

With a good understanding of the colour wheel, a nice brand new pack of felts, and a merging of the elements of earth, fun, and the love of colour, these wonderful worlds were born.
Bird House Chimes

Bird House Chimes

First project of the June 25th Camp was to decorate these little gizmos. The girls thoughtfully and meticulously cut and pasted lovely paper scraps onto the houses to make them nice and stylish for the birds.
More Camp Memory Books

More Camp Memory Books

Wasn’t that a party!? We had so much fun at this camp, and we’ve made these wonderful keepsake books to remind us. We played lots of tag, invented a horse game, made skipping ropes, spent hours at the beach exploring, building castles in the sand, and sailing our ships. We had a million great laughs and enjoyed each other’s company and creative inspiration. And we made so much art!
June Camp Highlights and ART SHOW

June Camp Highlights and ART SHOW

The first camp of the summer was awesome. We had 9 campers here, altogether, all day long, and boy did they make some cool stuff! For a lot of us, it was our first time tye-dying, which was such a fun project. We also painted, cut, pasted, sprinkled, splattered, drew, built, experimented, and shared our imaginations with each other. And the week FLEW by so fast!
